Seventeen-year-old Appalachian-style folk musician Nora Brown will make her debut at the Kennedy Center for a live concert taping of NPR's widely-syndicated radio show Mountain Stage on February 24.
Nora Brown started learning music at the age of six from the late Shlomo Pestcoe. From his tiny studio apartment in Brooklyn, Pestcoe instilled in her the belief that music is meant to be shared. Brown shares with the world her traditional music with a focus on Southern Appalachian banjo and guitar playing.
Hailed as a “rising star” by NPR’s Weekend Edition and “impossibly talented” by Fretboard Journal, Brown made her recorded return last summer with her third full-length album, Long Time To Be Gone. This album was recorded at the historic St. Ann’s Church in Brooklyn Heights, the soulful, mesmerizing collection of traditional tunes and Appalachian instrumentals follows her performance on NPR’s prestigious Tiny Desk Concert series, where she was lauded for bringing “incredible, surprising depth to the Appalachian music she plays.”
For nearly 40 years, Mountain Stage has been the home of live music on public radio. Since its inception in 1983, Mountain Stage has been under the creative direction of host and co-founder Larry Groce. This performance of Mountain Stage will be hosted by Grammy winner Kathy Mattea.
Appearing on the bill with Brown is David Bromberg and his quintet, fiddler/banjo player/singer Stephanie Coleman, Grammy-winning bluegrass musician and composer Peter Rowan, singer-songwriter Larry Campbell and singer-guitarist Teresa Williams, and roots supergroup The High Hawks.
This is your opportunity to see this rising star in her debut performance at The Kennedy Center. Watch her videos and listen to her music below. Although hailing from Brooklyn, this talented musician has Appalachia running through her veins.
