Comedy-rock duo Tenacious D – comprised of Jack Black (JB, Jables) and Kyle Gass (KG, Kage) –  treated their dedicated  fans to a sold-out show at The Anthem last Wednesday, November 7. The singer/songwriter/guitarists returned to the DC-area for the first time since 2012, when they played the Patriot Center (now EagleBank Arena) at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA.

The pair is touring in support of their most recent album, Post Apocalypto, which released on November 2.  The first segment of the show featured a performance of the album as whole, paired with original (and vulgar) drawings by JB projected onto a screen in front of the band. The songs featured Gass on acoustic guitar while Black soared with his powerful vocals. The record is somewhat of a satire on current social issues while including several favorite 'D' themes – dragons, weed and sex. "We will survive, we will strive," sang Black. The crowd chuckled at the raunchy nature of Black's lyrics combined with his vivid illustrations.

Following the completion of Post Apocalypto, Black informed the crowd it was time for the greatest hits segment of the show, to the delight of the maximum-capacity crowd. The band played hit after hit in a reverse-chronological order - beginning with several tunes off their 2012 release, Rise of the Fenix. Black's voice was strong and was sufficiently backed by the rest of the electric band. The band played several songs from their 2006 album/movie soundtrack, The Pick of Destiny, including their tribute to the late Ronnie James Dio of Black Sabbath

The end of the set included the D's best and most popular songs, 'Tribute' and 'Double Team' before exiting for an encore break. The band returned, donning USA-themed top hats they acquired earlier in the day near the White House for a double encore of 'Wonderboy' and 'Fuck Her Gently' to the delight of the crowd. KG and Jables came to DC to rock our socks off and indeed, they did.

Tenacious D continues their tour in Chicago tonight before hitting Canada and the west coast in December, including a NYE date in Las Vegas.
