With summer beating down upon the Mid-Atlantic, that can only mean festival season is in full swing. There is hope for those looking to cool down in the mountains of Virginia and attend a heater of a festival at the same time: FloydFest. With an unbelievable amount of talent on the bill, it’s guaranteed to be a good time for any music lover, and with temperatures predicted to be refreshing per summer standards, there won’t be any reason to hide in an air conditioned house for the weekend.
Floyd has amassed a lineup that will have festival goers glued to the 9 stages for five days, July 24-28. Headliners Phil Lesh, Tyler Childers, String Cheese Incident, and Kacey Musgraves are the main attractions, but with a long list of performers such as Leftover Salmon, Brandi Carlile, The Motet, Travers Brothership, Lucas Nelson, Margo Price, Keller Williams and more, it will be a weekend of sonic splendor for all. Despite there being nine stages, everything is located in a central part of the festival grounds and camping surrounds that, so there aren’t any major hikes that attendees will have to make. Additionally, the folks at Floyd have worked harder to make the fans lives easier by developing a free app for your cell phone that has all the necessary information you’ll need to have a good time at your fingertips. The app has full schedules, allows you to favorite events, so you can develop your own personal agenda for each day. With ten pounds of bands stuffed in a five pound schedule, it’s natural that there will be some schedule conflicts, but many bands are putting on at least two performances during the fest, so there will be plenty of opportunity to catch all the favorites along with discovering great new music.
Being a family friendly festival, the organizers have made sure that the future generations will want to keep coming back to festivals by providing lots of entertainment for the little ones. The Children’s Universe has a stage for performances geared to and by kids, a variety of interactive workshops, and will be featuring a parade on Saturday that they can participate in. Additionally, there is a semi-private tent to change and feed the children and since all of this is located near the main stage, parents won’t have to miss out on performances throughout the day.
For those who are seeking an adventure on top of music, FloydFest has you covered. Their outdoor adventure programs will get you out and about in the area and offer a variety of options such as guided mountain bike tours for novice and advanced riders, a kayak, canoe, or tubing trip down the Little River, a 5k race, and there’s even a disc golf course on the grounds.
The organizers at Floydfest have put in countless of hours of work to ensure, that this “Voyage Home” is a truly memorable experience and not just another music festival. Tickets are running low, so get them while you can to enjoy a once in a lifetime weekend n Floyd, Virginia!
