Fare Thee Well Gypsy Sally’s – A Retrospective One Year Later

A year ago we woke up from an incredibly memorable night of music and celelbration as a community mourned, celebrated, and collectively came together one last night at Gypsy Sally's. This venue was like no other venue in the city. It represented passion, friends, and community. It had the most welcoming staff. The music was second to none, and the love in that space was undeniable and immense.

If you took a slow turn at a peak moment of a show, you would see faces with eyes closed, some with tears, lots of smiles, and could sense people were remembering something beautiful or painful and reconciling with that emotion. It was a room of great humility, and we miss it dearly.

How near and dear is Gypsy Sally's to our heart? Gypsy Sally's was home to DC Music Review's staff before we decided to start our website. In October 2017, while DC Music Review was still just getting off the ground, we decided to plant our musical flag in the ground with Gypsy Sally's. Our first show covered was the Hallowscream 2017 performance. Throughout the years, we celebrated and breathed in the intoxicating sights and sounds of Gypsy Sally's as musicians performed on both stages. Countless stories can be told and retold by so many in our musical community and will surely be shared with one another for years to come.

Since January 5, 2020, the world has changed so much. Let us close our eyes right now and recall some of those memorable times at 3401 Water Street. We surely remember walking up to the venue and hearing music wafting in the air, we surely remember standing out back between set breaks, hanging out in 'The Bus' at The Vinyl Lounge, examining the ticket stubs embedded in the bar, listening to the music and most of all our musical family.

Here is the complete coverage of all of our coverage at this beloved and deeply missed venue. It really was more than a venue; it was our musical home and refuge. We hope this gallery brings a smile to your face and brings back memories long forgotten.
