Summary: Music as salve
Let's start with a show all DCMR staff are buzzing about:
Hayley Jane and The Primates with Pleasure Train at Gypsy Sally's on 10/4
Why?
"Hayley Jane brings a commanding presence to the stage with soulful vocals and a sometimes quirky...sometimes bad-ass charisma that is hard to look away from. They are one of those see-it-to-believe-it bands whose captivating style and fascinating lyrics are winning over crowds."
They are well worth checking out on Thursday with the upbeat, lyrical, sassy and smart DC-band Pleasure Train opening.
And this week you can see a ton of variety from some big shows and names coming into town, like:
- Monday: The Chick Corea Trio: Vigilette with Carlitos Del Puerto and Marcus Gilmore at The Birchmere
- Tuesday: Hozier with Hudson Taylor at The Lincoln Theatre
- Wednesday: Liz Phair with Speedy Ortiz at 9:30 Club, also Leon Bridges with Khruangbin at The Anthem
- Friday: Florence + The Machine with Beth Ditto at The Anthem, also Lykke Li with TiRon & Ayomari at The Lincoln Theatre
- Saturday: Florence + The Machine and Beth Ditto at The Anthem and also the ESA Grand Opening with Mary J. Blige Featuring Jacob Banks at Entertainment Sports Arena DC
- Sunday: Melvin Seals & JGB at The Hamilton
(It's worth pointing out that Melvin Seals is making his way across multiple venues in the DMV this upcoming week, including Charlottesville on Wednesday and Richmond on Saturday before he lands at DC's The Hamilton on Sunday.)
There are also a TON of interesting, off-the-beaten path shows in the "Hidden Gems" lists this week. (For example, something that feels like a must-see on Friday is a free neighborhood show with La Marvela, an "all-women music band that plays and highlights the richness of Colombian Afro and Indigenous -rhythms, formed in an effort to provide a space for learning and to be engaged in Colombian ancestral music.")
Last but not least, let us not forget the "Telluride Of The East" - The Festy Experience. This 3-Day Bluegrass festival starts Friday and continues throughout the weekend. And some other great (and local) free festivals to check out this weekend include the Adams Morgan PorchFest on Saturday and Takoma Park Street Festival on Sunday.
My sense is that music is a salve for a lot of people these days -- and this week especially, there are a deluge of incredible, diverse choices out there, so get to it and heal yourselves!
