{"id":104017,"date":"2019-11-06T09:00:19","date_gmt":"2019-11-06T14:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/?p=104017"},"modified":"2019-11-06T10:29:01","modified_gmt":"2019-11-06T15:29:01","slug":"russian-circles-come-to-union-stage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/russian-circles-come-to-union-stage\/","title":{"rendered":"Russian Circles Performs To The Faithful At Union Stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For fans of big, dirgy, and\/or chugging riffs, <strong>Union Stage<\/strong> was the place to be on Tuesday, October 29, when Chicago-based post-metal band <strong>Russian Circles<\/strong> and Richmond-based doom metal favorites <strong>Windhand<\/strong> stopped in to deliver some blistering performances.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Windham\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/JAH_3232.jpg\" alt=\"Windham\" width=\"722\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"104506\"><\/p>\n<p>Windham<\/p>\n<p>If anything, the theme of the night could be described at the highest level as \u201cloud,\u201d and <strong>Windhand<\/strong> had no problem sticking to that when they took the stage as the evening opener.&nbsp; Although the band\u2019s set only consisted of six songs that focused primarily on their latest releases (the full length album &#8220;Eternal Return&#8221; and split EP with <strong>Satan&#8217;s Sartyrs<\/strong>) as well as the 2013 album &#8220;Soma&#8221; (songs from the band&#8217;s other releases noticeably absent), the length of each filled out the set time amply.&nbsp; The band operated as a solid unit, with guitarist <strong>Garrett Morris<\/strong>, bassist <strong>Parker Chandler<\/strong>, and drummer <strong>Ryan Wolfe<\/strong> providing the heavy soundtrack to a crowd full of slowly headbanging listeners, with vocalist <strong>Dorthia Chandler<\/strong> crooning over it all.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When the four members are locked in, the sound is overwhelming (this is a good thing) and the overall effect is hypnotic, broken up occasionally by a lead guitar break by Morris.&nbsp; It is apparent that the band owes a great deal of its sound to early&nbsp;<strong>Black Sabbath<\/strong>&nbsp;albums like \u201cMaster or Reality\u201d (again, this is a good thing), and fans of bands like&nbsp;<strong>Sleep<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Weedeater<\/strong> would have eaten up every juicy riff (though anyone familiar with those bands most likely already knows this).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Windham\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/JAH_3232.jpg\" alt=\"Windham\" width=\"722\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"104506\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mike Sullivan of Russian Circles\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/JAH_3517.jpg\" alt=\"Mike Sullivan of Russian Circles\" width=\"807\" height=\"1024\" data-id=\"104507\"><\/p>\n<p>Mike Sullivan of Russian Circles<\/p>\n<p>After <strong>Windhand<\/strong>\u2019s set, <strong>Russian Circles <\/strong>took the stage.&nbsp; Consisting of only three members (guitarist <strong>Mike Sullivan<\/strong>, bassist <strong>Brian Cook<\/strong>, and drummer <strong>Dave Turncrantz<\/strong>), it is always impressive to bear witness to the layers upon layers of sounds the band can conjure using a variety of effects pedals and loopers (Cook even plays a bass synthesizer with his feet) over Turncrantz\u2019s precise and unrelenting drumming.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of a ten-song set, the band progressively built songs by adding a series of loops and sounds that created a sense of airiness and dissonance that ultimately culminated in resolutions that had the band all locked into one heavy, chugging riff.&nbsp; The set included most tracks from the band\u2019s most recent album, \u201cBlood Year,\u201d as well as cuts from across their past discography.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the night was about as good as it can get for fans of heavy music.&nbsp;
