Shadowgrass<\/strong>\u2013an incredibly talented up-and-coming bluegrass band\u2013took the stage at the District Wharf\u2019s Pearl Street Warehouse<\/strong> on a warm, humid evening on May 7, 2023, during the band\u2019s first headlining tour. <\/span><\/p>\n

Pearl Street\u2019s rolled-up garage door-style windows allowed the music to drift onto the patio, and as Shadowgrass took the stage, a woman from the crowd called out, \u201cWelcome to D.C.!\u201d which brought smiles to the band\u2019s faces. From the first notes from their instruments rang out, the crowd hollered and stomped their feet along with the thumping bass line.<\/span><\/p>\n

Composed of Kyser George<\/strong> (guitar), Luke Morris<\/strong> (mandolin), Clay Russell<\/strong> (banjo), Evan Campfield <\/strong> (bass), and Madison Morris<\/strong> (fiddle), Shadowgrass quickly rose to prominence last summer after a series of Instagram reels they posted went viral\u2013including one video of an impromptu performance with Billy Strings<\/strong>. The future is exceptionally bright for this group of young musicians. While Shadowgrass is young (Kyser George is so young that he has Xs on his hands, showing he can\u2019t even buy a beer at the bar.), they are incredibly talented as individuals and as a group. Each member of the band is a developing virtuoso, with each one more impressive than the last. When they improvise, they are spectacular listeners\u2013remaining patient and letting jams slowly and organically develop to a euphoric peak. Still, they also know when to stomp on the gas to get the crowd going during those high-test bluegrass jams. <\/span><\/p>\n

Shadowgrass showed off their chops on a variety of songs over two sets, including bluegrass standards\u2013like <\/span>Freeborn Man<\/span><\/em> and <\/span>Old Home Place<\/span><\/em>, classic rock covers\u2013like the Allman Brothers<\/strong>\u2019 <\/span>Midnight Rider<\/span><\/em> and Fleetwood Mac<\/strong>\u2019s <\/span>Dreams<\/span><\/em>, and modern classics\u2013like the viral <\/span>Midnight in Harlem<\/span><\/em> by the Tedeschi Trucks Band<\/strong> and <\/span>Crazy<\/span><\/em> by Gnarls Barkley<\/strong>. They also impressively covered two songs off David Grisman Quintet<\/strong>\u2019s self-titled album: <\/span>16\/16<\/span><\/em> and <\/span>E.M.D<\/span><\/em>. The Quintet\u2019s signature gypsy-jazz bluegrass style is notoriously intricate and challenging to play, and these young pickers tackled it with the precision and grace of seasoned veterans. They closed out the second set with a fiery original called <\/span>Carl\u2019s Breakdown<\/span><\/em>, a fun and upbeat tune about the banjo player Clay Russell\u2019s lost pet turtle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shadowgrass is definitely a band to keep an eye out for in the future. They have the musical chops to go the distance, and some of the best bluegrass musicians in the scene\u2013Billy Strings and the Infamous Stringdusters<\/strong>\u2019 Jeremy Garrett<\/strong>\u2013have been supporting their blossoming career.   If <\/span>you love bluegrass, watch their <\/span>tour schedule<\/span><\/a> for dates around DC and the DMV because it will become increasingly hard to see them as their popularity soars. <\/span><\/p>\n
