Vakili Band <\/strong>is set to perform at The Pocket <\/strong>in Washington, DC, on October 26th<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This band is no stranger to Washington DC, and they on tour supporting their their third full-length album, Honey<\/em><\/strong>, which was released on September 28, 2023.  <\/span> The fiery five-piece rock band is fronted by Lily Vakili<\/strong>, a savvy street poet who finds the sweet spot in the nexus formed by Patti Smith<\/strong>\u2019s loose-limbed punk swagger, Grace Slick<\/strong>\u2019s inviting psychedelia and the throaty blues-belting of a Janis Joplin<\/strong>, not to mention the full-throated howl of a Grace Potter<\/strong> or Brittany Howard<\/strong><\/p>\n

With roots firmly planted in the late-\u201970s \u201cFord to New York drop dead\u201d headlines era, Vakili pays tribute to those seminal punk influences on \u201cMapplethorpe,\u201d her ode to the love affair between the provocative photographer and Patti Smith depicted in her book Just Kids, with a lyrical nod to the \u201cbroken boys and torn-up men\/tough as licorice dribbling down my chin.\u201d<\/p>\n

The New York Dolls<\/strong> bump-and-grind meets the deadpan nihilism of the Velvet Underground<\/strong> in \u201cYves Calls Her Betty,\u201d which is based on an interview with designer Yves Saint-Laurent<\/strong> about his blonde \u201cfemale double,\u201d Betty Catroux,<\/strong> a sly look at the artist-muse relationship buttressed by the kick-ass bottom of Jovanis and Kuba.<\/p>\n

The shows are about as pure rock-n-roll as you can get and it will make you feel like should be smoking and drinking a beer in a dark, smokey corner of CBGBs or The Rat. Here’s some more info and their latest album<\/p>\n
