On Friday, February 16th, Washington DC’s DC9 Nightclub<\/strong> was slowly\u2013but assuredly\u2013filling up with anticipation and concert-goers, eager to share Chicago\u2019s best-kept secret, Brigitte Calls Me Baby<\/strong>. Thankfully we are in an era of music where we can have it all. The band\u2019s lead singer croons to its older listeners while the band incites its younger fans to dance with that mid-2000s British alt rock-sound. From the silver fox adoringly watching the show at the back with his sophisticated post-work PBR to an eight-year-old belting out every lyric and dancing way past her bedtime, this band really does have something for everyone. They are able to defy the demarcation between fans because they span time itself. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/span><\/p>\n

Opening the sold out show was The Montaines<\/strong>, a rapidly blossoming DC-based indie-rock band consisting of lead singer Alec O\u2019Brian<\/strong>, lead guitarist Jack O\u2019Brien<\/strong>, guitarist Luke De Cresce<\/strong>, drummer Ryan Damico<\/strong>, and bassist Seamu<\/strong>s<\/strong> Mulcahy<\/strong>. A play off the French word for \u201cmountains\u201d, The Montaines are keeping pace with their ambitions and reaching the heights of their namesake. Singer O\u2019Brian anecdotally reminded the audience that DC9 was the stage that The 1975<\/strong> played their first gig in DC, which is apt foreshadowing for Brigitte Calls Me Baby\u2019s Capitol debut last Friday. <\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/span>\"Wes<\/span><\/p>\n

With another French-inspired moniker (a nod to mid-twentieth century sex symbol Brigitte Bardot<\/strong>), Brigitte Calls Me Baby headlined the almost sold out 250 person capacity venue. <\/span>Like Capital Cities<\/strong> asserts, \u201cYou know it when you see it,\u201d and you just know it with BCMB<\/strong> (the band\u2019s acronym-friendly name proves they will be a DC fav.)   <\/span>BCMB is comprised of singer \/ songwriter Wes Leavins<\/strong>, guitarist <\/span>Trevor Lynch<\/strong>, bassist Devin Wessels<\/strong>,  guitarist Jack Fluegel<\/strong>, and drummer Jeremy Benshish<\/strong>. <\/span>From lead singer Wes Leavins\u2019 command of the stage and his enchanting gaze to the band\u2019s alt-rock infused sound, there is no denying Brigitte Calls Me Baby\u2019s energy and synergy with each other.  <\/span><\/p>\n

The band promptly appeared on stage after The Montaines, and we were immediately jumpin\u2019 and jivin\u2019 with \u201cYou Are Only Made of Dreams,\u201d the lively, melancholic love lost track from BCMB\u2019s debut EP <\/span>This House Is Made of Corners<\/em>\u201d They then transitioned into one of the band\u2019s most popular songs, \u201cEddie My Love,\u201d whose opening specifically reminds us of the Spanish all-girl punk band <\/span>Hinds<\/strong>\u2019 2016 album <\/span>Leave Me Alone<\/em>. Entirely unrelated but rather speaks to BCMB\u2019s effortless genre bending. They continued the set with their budding discography including the self-reflective, impressively streamed \u201cImpressively Average\u201d and a seamless cover of <\/span>George Michael<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cCareless Whisper.\u201d <\/span> <\/strong>As a mirror ball was lit the room began to spin with colors. BCMB did not merely cover Michael’s classic song but they  arranged in their style and embraced it as a song of their own blending seamlessly into their setlist. They also surprised the crowd with a new song, which is hopefully a forecast of what\u2019s to come from the newly signed ATO Records\u2019 artists, label mates to <\/span>Old Crow Medicine Show<\/strong>, <\/span>My Morning Jacket<\/strong>, and <\/span>Black Pumas<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Bridgette<\/span><\/p>\n

During his interactions with the crowd, frontman Leavins proudly exclaimed \u201cIt\u2019s about time\u201d when referring to the band\u2019s journey to this point. Like a looming storm, you can feel the energy emanating from BCMB and you can\u2019t help but let yourself get swept away. <\/span><\/p>\n

Leavins\u2019 seductive vocals has me wishing for a collaboration with Y\u2019all-ternative artist Orville Peck<\/strong> or cinematic sad girl Lana Del Rey<\/strong>, both whose emotive vocals will make you shiver.<\/span><\/p>\n

Having just released their first EP <\/span>last November they exploded onto the international musical landscape with a successful festival season with appearances at UK-based All Points East<\/strong> and Austin\u2019s SXSW<\/strong>.  With this sort of success we can only look on the horizon for where their career will take them.  <\/span><\/p>\n<\/p>\n
