On June 5th, Union Stage<\/strong> in Washington, D.C. transformed into a haven of intimate energy, perfect for an unforgettable night with Australian Indie-Folk band Hollow Coves<\/strong>. Ryan Henderson <\/strong>and Matt Carins, <\/strong>who formed a passion for nature through years of grounding themselves in nature while touring internationally, have partnered with the National Parks Foundation for their Nothing To Lose t<\/em>our.  Because exploring natural wonders played such a crucial role in inspiring their newest album of the same name (released March 2024), Hollow Coves is committed to donating a portion of each North American ticket sale to preserving the natural beauty of our national parks. This collaboration underscores a vital message in our overwhelmingly digital era: to lift our gaze from screens and interact with the world around us. <\/p>\n

\"Billianne\"\"Billianne\"<\/p>\n

The night began with Billianne<\/strong>, an enchanting Canadian singer-songwriter whose soulful melodies warmed the crowd and established an emotive, whimsical tone. Before diving into her standout “Tower of Sequins,” Billianne painted a vivid picture of a rose-colored stroll through a much less colorful area of Toronto\u2014a city she’s grown to love. She shared how this moment of paradoxical dissociation inspired the lyrics, “And I wonder what I can find here \/ I’d feel all the stars aligning \/ I got time, I’m alive,” and earnestly wished she\u2019d “never lose that sense of wonderment.”<\/p>\n

Hollow Coves took the stage with an undeniable passion; supported by Christopher Milnes<\/strong> and Tom Fred Bradshaw<\/strong>, Henderson and Carins walked onstage with a rare authenticity that instantly captivated the eager audience. Formed in 2013, the duo invited the crowd to gather around their metaphorical campfire, to share timeless stories and memories. Henderson and Carins’ love for the natural world shone through each song, which seemed to come alive in every listener’s ear. Each melody and lyric was a call to remember past adventures and to dream of future endeavors, taking on a new life with every performance. <\/p>\n

The Hollow Coves set began with the poignant title track of their latest album, “Nothing to Lose,” establishing an ambiance of stoic reflection for the evening. Just as the crowd had happily succumbed to being enveloped by Henderson\u2019s resonant vocals in the serene “The Woods,” the atmosphere irreversibly shifted with robust laughter. Carins and Milnes playfully and exaggeratingly bopped their hips in a Fresh Prince Apache-esque line dance, jump-turns and all. The tone was set: we were free to have fun, be silly, and most importantly, be true to ourselves in whatever way felt right.<\/p>\n

\"Hollow<\/p>\n

They continued into “Letting Go” and “Purple” which introduced a cloud of dreamy nostalgia. The vibrant crowd chuckled again at the Aussie-accented request for them to “have a bit of a boogie” as if they needed encouragement to slide into the inevitable. Henderson added “hopefully we can make a moment tonight that will last forever”  before bleeding into the fan favorite “Moments,” creating an atmosphere of joy and connection that truly made the night unforgettable. Breathless from yelling \u201cmake these moments last,\u201d the audience\u2019s excitement catapulted further upon hearing \u201chey, it\u2019s time to light a fire in this place\u201d signaling their YOLO manifesto, \u201cHarder to Fake It.\u201d<\/p>\n

Shifting into an acoustic interlude, Carin and Henderson recognized the beauty and simplicity of the past all while having our gaze pointed to a future bursting with actualized dreams. Starting with “Let’s Go,” an invitation to see life as having no bounds or limitations and following with “Evermore,” their poignant lyrics and gentle melodies illuminated the profound connections created through Hollow Coves songs for both the performers and the audience. The acoustic segment concluded with “See You Soon,” an ode to the inevitable phenomenon of relationships changing with time and distance. It\u2019s a gentle nudge to value the ever-fleeting present, as today\u2019s moments will be tomorrow\u2019s cherished memories.<\/p>\n

Upon reuniting with the full band, Hollow Coves ignited the room with “Photographs,” which speaks to the importance of documenting our lives. \u201cThis is how we always remember\/ this is how we never forget\u201d flips the selfie narrative by painting our pic-or-it-didn\u2019t-happen culture as savory admiration rather than distraction, in turn giving permission to shamelessly snap away. This mindset is surely a product of the band\u2019s mission of blending creation and appreciation into unique, relatable art. They continued this theme of wide-eyed discovery with “The Open Road,” “Blessings,” and “Anew.”<\/p>\n

After a quick tease, Hollow Coves returned to the stage for a memorable encore of “Coastline” and “Milk & Honey,” bringing their journey full circle.  Their performance encapsulated countless journeys like streams branching off a spring. The set was rich with songs from their most recent album and sprinkled with tracks from their entire discography, showcasing Hollow Coves’ evolution all while guiding the audience through their own, whether they were longtime followers or first-time listeners.<\/p>\n

Hollow Coves\u2019 setlist preached that we can\u2019t and shouldn\u2019t hide from our past; our experiences are as permanent and necessary as the ground upon which we stand. That night the audience witnessed a recollection of their upward spiral: from the “Drifting” (EP, 2014) feeling of the band’s early days, to being overwhelmed with “Wanderlust” (EP, 2017) as they took their songs on the road.  They learned to embrace life\u2019s most simple \u201cMoments\u201d (Album, 2019) while recognizing the \u201cBlessings\u201d (EP, 2021) every step of the way.<\/p>\n

The night told the tale of how the earlier Hollow Coves works, born from wildly different but equally charming seasons, brought the artists to their recent album “Nothing to Lose,” a bold and fearless embrace of life’s uncertainties. The band\u2019s evolutionary journey speaks to the power of naming your dreams and daring to pursue them, encouraging listeners to take risks and live fully.<\/p>\n

Long after the stage lights dimmed and the tick of the house lights signaled the closing of tabs, conversations lingered with laughter around the still-buzzing room. Friends bounced in and out of each other’s arms excited and inspired. One man credited his decision to leave a life in Academia to pursue his passion of becoming an artist after he first heard “Harder To Fake It,” solidifying the notion that music truly does change lives. <\/p>\n

From the heartfelt opener to the energetic encore, Hollow Coves was met with intensity and adoration from their tribe. Hollow Coves’ signature blend of lyrical depth and melodic beauty stood as a testament to the enduring magic of shared musical moments.<\/p>\n

Hollow Coves, who has partnered with the National Parks Foundation, are donating a portion of each ticket sold to help preserve the parks’ natural beauty. They were able to celebrate World Environment Day<\/strong> (June 5) and World Ocean Day<\/strong> (June 8) by visiting and performing at Rock Creek Park in the District and Independence Park in Philly. The band will continue to raise additional awareness by making stops at parks across the country, including Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, Badlands National Park, Zion National Park. All while blasting their new song “On The Way,”  which was inspired by getting lost in national parks on tour and serves as an ode to “venturing the great unknown.”<\/p>\n
