{"id":31021,"date":"2018-04-12T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-04-12T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/?p=31021"},"modified":"2019-03-19T09:09:17","modified_gmt":"2019-03-19T13:09:17","slug":"the-motet-headlines-non-stop-dance-party-at-930-club","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/the-motet-headlines-non-stop-dance-party-at-930-club\/","title":{"rendered":"The Motet Headlines Non-Stop Dance Party at 9:30 Club"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Denver\u2019s seven-piece funk powerhouse, <strong>The Motet,<\/strong> brought their tour through the nation\u2019s capital last Thursday, headlining DC\u2019s 9:30 Club with support from Washington\u2019s \u201c12-piece Afrofunk orchestra,\u201d <strong>Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" title=\"Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band. \" data-id=\"35201\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/9O6A4155.jpg\" scale=\"0\" style=\"width: 100%; user-select: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>On a night with competing shows all over town, fans who made the choice of getting down at DC\u2019s historic nightclub were not disappointed, as both plans played lively sets that kept the crowd moving and shaking from start to finish.<\/p>\n<p>Chopteeth&nbsp; was an excellent choice for the opening slot and played a great set of world-inspired funk that surely won over more than a few Motet fans. Their music draws inspiration from all over the world, with lead vocalist\/guitarist<strong> Michael Shereikis <\/strong>and the rest of the band singing in several different languages throughout the set, but is particularly anchored in Afrobeat and big band jazz, featuring a five-piece horn section and a pair of percussionists. The music\u2019s West African polyrhythms and relentless energy got the crowd warmed up well for a long night of dancing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"621\" height=\"1024\" title=\"Drew Sayers of The Motet\" data-id=\"35029\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/9O6A4336.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Drew Sayers of The Motet<\/p>\n<p>When the Motet took the stage, fans were anxious to keep the party going, and the band responded, putting the pedal to the metal immediately with \u201cThe Truth.\u201d The Motet horns, made up of trumpet player <strong>Parris Flemming<\/strong><strong> <\/strong>and saxophonist <strong>Drew Sayers<\/strong>, established themselves right away, along with keyboardist<strong> Joey Porter <\/strong>accompanying on the clavinet.<\/p>\n<p>It was immediately apparent that the crowd would feed off the energy of vocalist <strong>Lyle Divinsky<\/strong> all night, as the frontman danced around the stage, mic stand in tow at times, encouraging his band mates during their solos. With the exception of a few instrumental numbers where he left the stage, that trend continued throughout the set. Divinsky\u2019s charisma and showmanship set a great tone for the show, and he was aware of it, declaring \u201cWe\u2019re starting off real good tonight,\u201d halfway through the opening number.<\/p>\n<p>Slowing things down just a tad with \u201cBack it Up,\u201d this funky R&amp;B tune featured the first standout solo of the night from Porter and an opportunity for the crowd to sing along with the chorus. \u201cDamn!\u201d came next, featuring some call and response, a meaty guitar solo from <strong>Ryan Jalbert<\/strong>, and a chorus that would fit right in with James Brown\u2019s catalog.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"\" width=\"733\" height=\"1024\" title=\"Lyle Divinsky of The Motet\" data-id=\"35030\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/9O6A4637.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lyle Divinsky of The Motet<\/p>\n<p>Divinsky left the stage briefly for the psychedelic fusion jazz jam \u201cCretan.\u201d When he returned for \u201cKeep On,\u201d the band took off with this infectious rocker, highlighted by a talk-box solo by Porter that really energized the crowd, who roared when the effect kicked in.<\/p>\n<p>From that point on, the band had the crowd in the palm of its hand, slowing the tempo with tunes like \u201cSupernova,\u201d \u201cRynodub,\u201d and \u201cFool No More,\u201d before eventually reigniting the crowd with \u201cClosed Mouth Don\u2019t Get Fed\u201d and giving drummer\/bandleader <strong>Dave Watts<\/strong> a solo to close out the set.
