Karin McLaughlin:<\/strong> Ok so hanging out with Cris Jacobs after his set at the Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival<\/strong><\/p>\n

Cris Jacobs:<\/strong> Hey hey!<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> That was pretty intense with the rain, that was really a good one!<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Yeah that was really cool, it was like a 30 second downpour<\/p>\n

KM<\/strong>: Heavy, heavy. So you also recently played Delfest,<\/strong> now Kingman Island<\/strong>, where do you go after this?<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Well, we\u2019re going home tonight. And then next week, we\u2019ve got some cool shows. We\u2019ve got a concert series in Abingdon, VA and Charlotte, NC and then we\u2019re going out west and doing High Sierra and then we\u2019ve got a bunch of shows around that.  We\u2019ll be doing Hot August<\/strong> in Baltimore at the end of the summer.  Got a couple Bridge<\/strong> shows next week \u2013 the 8×10<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> You\u2019re all over it.  And you\u2019re from Charm City \u2013<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Yes!<\/p>\n

KM<\/strong>: Any idea why they call it Charm City?<\/p>\n

CJ: <\/strong>Because it\u2019s charming (laughs) you know what, I don\u2019t know the origin of that.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

KM<\/strong>: Because, present company excluded, they aren\u2019t toooooo\u2026.<\/p>\n

CJ: <\/strong>No, Baltimore gets a bad rap<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> What\u2019s your favorite venue to play in Baltimore?<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> 8×10<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> That\u2019s a good one<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> I have probably played that venue more than anybody on the planet. Honestly, throughout the years and all the different venues.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> Yeah, it\u2019s like a sweatbox in there<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> They have the AC cranking in there these days. In the old days, you know you could smoke in there.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> You also mentioned the Dead \u2013 did you say that you saw them here in \u201994?<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Yes.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> How old were you in \u201994?<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> I was 16<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> So this was not with parents?<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Actually, this was with parents because my parents were huge Deadheads and my parents have been going to see the Dead since 1968.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> Nice!  So here at RFK.<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Everywhere but yeah that was my first show and they, you know, my parents have been leaving me and my sister with a sitter for long weekends all throughout our childhood for three nights at Madison Square Garden (laughs)<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> Yup, I have friends that are doing that (now)<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> So finally, it was \u2018hey can you guys get me a ticket this time around?\u2019<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> And then it was all clicking \u2018Oh, that\u2019s what they\u2019ve been doing all this time!\u2019<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Oh yeah, absolutely!  It clicked right away.<\/p>\n

KM<\/strong>: How much would you say the Dead influences your music?<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Oh it influenced my whole\u2026.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> Life? (laughs)<\/p>\n

\u200b\u200b<\/strong>CJ:<\/strong> Yeah, it influenced my whole jumping off point into a different world and that\u2019s when I really got inspired to play the guitar.  To perform and write music for people \u2013 it was that show, here at RFK, it was my first \u2018a-ha moment\u2019 like \u2018I wanna do THAT\u2019 so I guess you could say that it\u2019s influenced me quite a bit.<\/p>\n

KM<\/strong>: So, what was that \u2013 a cigar box with strings attached to it?<\/p>\n

CJ<\/strong>: Yeah.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> Did you build that?<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> No, I know a guy out in Oregon that makes them and he\u2019s built me a couple.  Yeah, it\u2019s a cigar box guitar, it\u2019s pretty wicked.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> That\u2019s awesome \u2013 like the old school washboard and jug. <\/p>\n

CJ: <\/strong>Yeah it\u2019s cool.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> So, you\u2019re playing Hot August (Music Festival)<\/strong>, what else are you excited about in 2018?  Maybe not even playing a show, maybe going to one.  Are you teaming up with anyone you\u2019re really excited about?<\/p>\n

CJ: <\/strong>Well, we just opened for Willie Nelson and Sturgill Simpson at The Anthem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> What is that tour called?<\/p>\n

CJ: <\/strong>Well, they\u2019re doing the Outlaw Music Festival but we did just a show at The Anthem<\/strong> with just them.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> Sturgill is good.<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Yeah he is<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> And Willie obviously<\/p>\n

CJ: <\/strong>And Willie. But yeah we\u2019re excited.  Finishing up our album, got a new album in the works and putting out an album in September that I worked with Ivan Neville on<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> Oh, nice, I caught him, I think at Jazz Fest recently.<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Yeah, you probably did!  He\u2019s all over the place.  When were you down there?<\/p>\n

KM: <\/strong>I was down the first weekend of Jazz Fest.<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Oh, I just missed you \u2013 I was down there Monday of the week between.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> Monday is something else in New Orleans, Bourbon St is a sad, sad sight (laughs)<\/p>\n

CJ:<\/strong> Yeah, I don\u2019t even go to Bourbon Street anymore<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> So, my token question \u2013 what\u2019s on the musical bucket list?  Either seeing someone at a certain venue, playing with someone, write a song with someone, anything.<\/p>\n

CJ: <\/strong>Hmm, good question.  There\u2019s a lot of people I\u2019d like to write songs with.  I\u2019d love to write a song with Chris Stapleton or Jason Isbell but I\u2019d love to play with some members of The Grateful Dead one day before it\u2019s all over.  I haven\u2019t gotten to experience that one yet, but I feel like it could happen soon.<\/p>\n

KM:<\/strong> Yeah, why not?!  Well thank you so much for the time.  We\u2019ll see you at Hot August or somewhere in between. <\/p>\n
