\u200b<\/strong> With a triple lineup of three outstanding alternative rock bands \u2014 The Cult<\/strong>, Stone Temple Pilots<\/strong> and Bush<\/strong>\u2014plus opening band The Dirty Hooks<\/strong>\u2014the audience rocked out at Jiffy Lube Live on Sunday, August 5. More than 40,000 people came out to watch the bands perform on the 11th stop of their 20 city Revolution 3 (Rev3) Tour. <\/p>\n

As tri-headliners the bands rotated their performance order during each show on the tour. At the Jiffy Lube Live <\/strong>show, The Cult hit the stage first, followed up Stone Temple Pilots and then Bush. Each of the bands played a full set of music.<\/p>\n

The Dirty Hooks<\/strong><\/p>\n

Opening for the tri-headliners was LasVegas-based  The Dirty Hooks<\/a>\u200b, which joined the Rev3 tour in August and are set to play through the end of the tour on September 2nd\u200b<\/sup>.<\/p>\n

Commenting on the show at Jiffy Lube Live, the band\u2019s co-lead vocalist and bassist Bobby McCall<\/strong> said: \u201cIt\u2019s been the best response yet as far as the crowd goes. The fans were amazing & some of the best people we\u2019ve had the pleasure of talking to so far on the Rev3 tour.\u201d<\/p>\n

An indie\/garage\/blues\/rock trio, Dirty Hooks also consists of co-lead vocalist and drummer Jenine Cali<\/strong> and guitarist\/keyboardist Anthony Ratto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Dirty Hooks performed 5 songs at the show, starting off with “Cicada Tree” <\/em>and finishing with “Midnight Runway.“<\/em><\/p>\n

The Cult<\/strong><\/p>\n

First up of the tri-headliners was The Cult<\/strong><\/a>\u200b, starting off by performing three songs from the 80\u2019s: “Wild Flower” <\/em>(1987) from their album Electric, “<\/em>Rain” <\/em>(1985) from Love,<\/em> and “Spiritwalker” (1984) of the band\u2019s debut album Dreamtime.<\/em> <\/p>\n

Formed in 1983 in the UK, The Cult began as a post-punk\/gothic rock band before breaking into mainstream in the U.S. in the late 1980\u2019s as a hard rock band. Under various line-ups, the original band split up in 1995, then reunited from 1999 to 2002, and then got back together again in 2006 to the present. <\/p>\n

Two of The Cult\u2019s members have been with band since its founding: lead vocalist\/guitarist\/ percussionist Ian Astbury<\/strong> and lead guitarist Bill Duffy<\/strong>. Drummer John Tempesta<\/strong> joined the band in 2006. Keyboardist\/vocalist Damon Fox <\/strong>and bassist\/vocalist Grant Fitzpatrick<\/strong> joined The Cult in 2015.<\/p>\n

With a background of dazzling videos, the Cult played 11 songs, including the U.S. chart topping songs “Rise” and “Firewoman.” Segueing back and forth between performing songs from the 80\u2019s and 90\u2019s, plus “Rise” (2001) and “Elemental Light” (2012), the audience was treated to an outstanding show.<\/p>\n

Stone Temple Pilots<\/strong><\/p>\n

With a new frontman, Stone Temple Pilots <\/strong><\/a>\u200b<\/strong>(STP) started off their show by performing “Wicked Garden,” one of the band\u2019s biggest hits. The song’s lyrics were written by Scott Weiland<\/strong>, STP\u2019s former long-time frontman. Many of the concertgoers were likely seeing Jeff Gutt<\/strong>, the new lead singer, perform for the first time live and the buzz among the crowd about Gutt\u2019s performance\u2014and the entire band\u2014was extremely positive. <\/p>\n

Formed in 1989 in San Diego, STP\u2019s original lineup remained unchanged with the exception of the lead singer Weiland, who left the band in 2013. Chester Bennington<\/strong>, of Linkin Par<\/strong>k<\/strong>, replaced Weiland in May 2013 until Nov. 2015. Tragically, Weiland died of an overdose in Dec. 2015 and Bennington by suicide in July 2107. STP\u2019s three other current members have been with the band since its inception: bassist\/backing vocalist Robert DeLeo<\/strong> and guitarist Dean DeLeo<\/strong>, who are brothers, and drummer Eric Kretz<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

\"Stone<\/span><\/p>\n

During the show, STP performed 12 chart-topping hits, including “Vasoline,” <\/em>the 1994 song that reached #1 on the Billboard U.S. Mainstream Rock Chart and #2 on the Billboard U.S. Alternative chart. <\/p>\n

Marking the new era with Gutt as frontman, STP performed two songs from the band\u2019s 2018 second self-titled 7th studio album: “Meadow” and “Roll Me Under.”<\/p>\n

Capping of the show, STP performed mega hit “Sex Type Thing,” the band\u2019s traditional closing song at live shows. <\/p>\n

Clearly wowed by the outstanding performance, the audience clapped and cheered with great enthusiasm when the four band members took a bow at the end of the show.<\/p>\n

DC Music Review caught up with a few D.C. area musicians who were in attendance at the show to find out their take on new frontman and the STP show:<\/p>\n

\"Stone<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was one of the many that questioned Jeff\u2019s ability to deliver Scott\u2019s parts as we all remember them,\u201d said John V. Hardwick<\/strong>, drummer with Uncle Jesse<\/a> <\/em>and Make More Animals<\/em><\/a>. \u201cThat said, any true fan of the STP music got exactly what they needed last Sunday. The band was tighter than ever and it was great to see them so connected with the crowd.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought Jeff Gutt was exceptional as the new frontman,\u201d agreed Michael Hynes<\/strong>, guitarist\/backing vocalist in Vintage Kitty<\/a>. <\/em>\u201cHe really played the part. He sounded and looked like Scott Weiland. Gutt tried to duplicate Weiland\u2019s original sound and vibe–and he nailed it\u2026 STP is as strong as ever.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI thought STP sounded stellar,\u201d added Carter Pennell<\/strong>, guitarist in Kleptoradio<\/em><\/a>. \u201cDespite the casual fan\u2019s parochial focus on Weiland, I\u2019ve long considered the DeLeo brothers to be the real driving talent of the band. I\u2019ve always been impressed by Dean DeLeo as probably the most talented and innovative guitarist of that style\/era. He and Rob were able to very successfully weave jazz elements into radio hits creating complexities that are typically missing in pop music; STP songs are just outright recognizable and enjoyable songs to listen to even without the vocals. And it\u2019s not just that STP has good music – it\u2019s that they still play it so well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bush<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBreathe in, Breath out…\u201d Bush<\/a><\/strong> frontman Gavin Rossdale <\/strong>sang while stepping up the stage at Jiffy Lube Live. Starting off the show with a bang, the band performed the mega hit song “Machinehead” to an extremely enthusiastic crowd. <\/p>\n

Formed in London in the early 90\u2019s and still going strong, Bush consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Rossdale, drummer Robin Goodridge<\/strong>, lead guitarist Chris Traynor<\/strong>, and bassist Corey Britz<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

From start to finish the audience sang and shouted along to the lyrics of eight chart-topping songs from the 90\u2019s that Bush performed at the show. <\/p>\n

Bush also performed “This is War,” a single from their 2017 album Black and White Rainbows<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Reaching back in time, the band also covered “Come Together” <\/em>by The Beatles<\/strong>, a fan favorite rendition that Bush has performed many times at past concerts.<\/p>\n

Highlights of the show included Rossdale\u2019s performance of “Glycerine,” during which thousands audience members waved their illuminated cell phones in the air while singing along.<\/p>\n

During the performance of “Little Things” <\/em>Rossdale jumped down from the stage and sang while running throughout the crowd. People scrambled to get close to the singer who sang enthusiastically with an entourage of admiring fans following along while attempting to take photos. When Rossdale returned to the stage to conclude the song the audience clapped and cheered with tremendous appreciation.<\/p>\n

Topping off the show, Bush performed “Comedown,” which seemed to perfectly evoke the mood of the audience. While performing in front of the stunning video backdrop, the audience sang along to the verse:<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
