Songs like <a style=\"user-select: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Hi4FynAVWl8\">\u201cBreathing On Me\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;and \u201cBedstuy\u201d jumped back and forth between traditional&nbsp;<strong>Dead Kennedys<\/strong>-style aggression and the dark, down-tempo march of&nbsp;<strong>Melvins<\/strong>-influenced sludge. Thick guitar sounds crunched along with the beat, and Greenwell occasionally slid into a convincing&nbsp;<strong>Kim Gordon<\/strong>&nbsp;impression, borrowing the&nbsp;<strong>Sonic Youth<\/strong>&nbsp;singer\u2019s signature unaffected, irreverent delivery. And while hardcore to the bone, GYMSHORTS also didn\u2019t shy away from dialing back the rawness for a couple short, head-bobbing rockers that put Greenwell\u2019s best songwriting on display. With&nbsp;<a style=\"user-select: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/gymshorts-ri\/tracks\">\u201cYou Blew It,\u201d<\/a>&nbsp;the most recent single off of the forthcoming album&nbsp;<em><a style=\"user-select: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/wallflowerrecords.org\/products\/gymshorts-knock-knock\">Knock, Knock!<\/a><\/em>, the band squeezed every last drop out of 90 seconds of an energetic and impressive tune that smacks of <strong>The Hives<\/strong>\u2019 first album.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly for the young band out of Providence, it was the newest and currently unreleased songs played Friday night that showed the most maturity and promise. Radio-friendly \u201coohs,\u201d peppy drumbeats, and classic major-key chord progressions make for songs that at first blush may seem like closer cousins to bubblegum pop than punk rock. Then again, were <strong>The Ramones<\/strong> really so far from <strong>The Monkees<\/strong>? \u201cI hate to blow the mystique,\u201d Joey Ramone once told an interviewer, \u201cbut at the time we really liked bubblegum music.\u201d <a style=\"user-select: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-lists\/50-greatest-boy-band-songs-of-all-time-167803\/bay-city-rollers-saturday-night-1975-149000\/\">(Ramone even went on to refer to the \u201cHey! Ho! Let\u2019s go!\u201d chant from \u201cBlitzkrieg Bop\u201d as \u201cour version\u201d of \u201cS-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y! Hey!\u201d from the chart-topping teenage pop song \u201cSaturday Night.\u201d)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The return to pop-punk roots is paying off for the Seattle rockers. A sold-out room greeted Tacocat on Friday, with an age-diverse audience that speaks to the band\u2019s generation-spanning appeal. It turns out whether you grew up in the heyday of The Ramones or just found them digging through your parents\u2019 record collection, that original formula of sixties pop with distortion and rebellious lyrics still packs a punch.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, the early Beach Boys influence shines through and gives Tacocat some of their strongest material; \u201cBridge to Hawaii,\u201d \u201cI Love Seattle,\u201d and \u201cCrimson Wave\u201d\u2014the latter two which closed out Friday\u2019s set\u2014all bottle that summer fun-in-the-sun vibe and sprinkle in a little punk edge with top-notch results. Nokes delivered the lyrics to \u201cHey Girl,\u201d a sharp commentary on street harassment, with just the sort of brash and sneering attitude misogynists deserve: \u201cWho do you think you are? \/ Yelling at me from your car? \/ . . . \/ I was on my way to work. \/ You\u2019re just a sweaty jerk.\u201d If punk is about rebellion, nothing\u2019s more punk than getting mad, staying mad, and refusing to put up with the status quo of harassment and \u201clocker room talk\u201d in the highest echelons of society in 2018.
