Peter Shapiro<\/strong> and Dave Frey\u2019s<\/strong>LOCKN\u2019 Festival<\/strong> has become one of the most anticipated events on music-lovers\u2019 calendars each summer, and this year\u2019s installment delivered another incredible weekend with a stacked lineup featuring jam-bands, funk, bluegrass and more. For its sixth year the Arrington, VA festival announced it would feature two headlining performances by Dead & Company,<\/strong> a fitting top of the bill for this festival honoring the legacy of the Grateful Dead<\/strong>. Attendees were treated to an incredible schedule of music on one stage – a trademark of the festival – and perfect weather throughout the weekend.<\/p>\n

LOCKN\u2019, originally named Interlocken Music Festival, has become known for its turntable stage. There are no conflicting sets and no gaps to set up between bands. As one band performs, another is setting up on the back of the stage, and once a set is finished, the stage literally spins with the next band ready to go. On night one of the festival, Lettuce <\/strong>and Umphrey\u2019s McGee<\/strong> used this feature to incredible effect. The bands each played two sets, alternating with one another, and as Lettuce finished their second set with the Herbie Hancock<\/strong> classic ‘Hang Up Your Hang Ups,’ the stage began to turn with the band still playing, and then stopped halfway through its rotation. What ensued was one of the magical moments that makes LOCKN\u2019 so special, as Umphrey\u2019s McGee joined in the jam until members of Lettuce crossed from one side of the stage partition to the other, leaving more than a dozen musicians on stage playing the tune together as the Umphrey\u2019s set officially began. It was a stunning example of the kinds of collaborations that have made LOCKN\u2019 a true gem of the festival circuit every summer.<\/p>\n

Friday featured a number of sets with members of Joe Russo\u2019s Almost Dead<\/strong> (JRAD) who have become late-night staples at LOCKN\u2019, playing two nights each of the last three years. Tom Hamilton<\/strong> brought his new band Ghost Light<\/strong>, featuring Holly Bowling<\/strong>, Steve Lyons<\/strong>, Raina Mullen<\/strong> and Scotty Zwang<\/strong>, as Joe Russo<\/strong>, Dave Dreiwitz<\/strong>, and Scott Metzger<\/strong> joined Chris Harford\u2019s<\/strong> \u201cBand of Changes\u201d for afternoon sets, before playing late-night again after George Clinton and P-Funk<\/strong> and Widespread Panic <\/strong>– highlighted by an incredible performance of Janis Joplin\u2019s<\/strong> ‘Take Another Piece of My Heart’ with Margo Price<\/strong> on vocals.. Among the most anticipated sets that day was an announced collaboration between Umphrey\u2019s McGee and Jason Bonham<\/strong>, the son of the late Led Zeppelin<\/strong> drummer John Bonham<\/strong>. This set offered some heavy rock and unexpected sit-ins, as Bonham joined Umphrey\u2019s to play five Zeppelin tunes, bringing out special guests Taylor Hicks<\/strong> and Derek Trucks<\/strong> to join on ‘When the Levee Breaks’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love,’ respectively.<\/p>\n

Once the weekend arrived, the festival completely changed, with nearly an additional 10,000 fans joining the fun for the two nights of Tedeschi Trucks Band<\/strong> and Dead & Co. that would take place on Saturday and Sunday. Sunday\u2019s Dead & Co set was especially anticipated with a full set featuring Branford Marsalis<\/strong> on saxophone. Both of these bands were well worth the trip, with Tedeschi Trucks Band in particular delivering two of the best sets of the weekend. The first glimpse of the headlining musicians would come during the outstanding \u201cFoundations of Funk\u201d set, celebrating 50 years of the Meters<\/strong>. This set included original members Zigaboo Modelist<\/strong> and George Porter Jr.<\/strong>, as well as collaborators Cyril Neville<\/strong>, Ivan Neville<\/strong>, and Tony Hall<\/strong>. The New Orleans funk legends brought Dead & Co guitarists Bob Weir<\/strong> and John Mayer<\/strong>, along with percussionists Bill Kreutzmann<\/strong> and Mickey Hart<\/strong>, on stage for several songs out of the Meters catalog, marking another incredible and memorable LOCKN’ moment. Weir and Mayer would also join an outstanding late night set by Lettuce with guitarist Eric Krasno<\/strong> celebrating the Jerry Garcia Band. <\/strong>The memorable set included a myriad of sit-ins from serious players including John Mayer, Bob Weir, Oteil Burbridge<\/strong>, Kofi Burbridge<\/strong>, Mark Rivers<\/strong> and Alecia Chakour<\/strong> that gave way to high-energy funk party that lasted until 3 a.m and was one of the most talked-about performances of the festival.<\/p>\n

Beyond the music, LOCKN\u2019 offered endless delights between the around the clock party in Garcia\u2019s Forest, dozens of craft beers, artisan food and craft vendors, and boundlessly warm and welcoming crowd. The festival also continued to give back to the DMV music scene, featuring four Virginia acts who earned their spot on the lineup through a fan vote with the annual ROCKN\u2019 to LOCKN\u2019 competition \u2013 The Fuzz Band<\/strong>, Disco Risque<\/strong>, Firecracker Jam<\/strong> and The Judy Chop<\/strong>s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
