That palatable vibrancy in the air?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-165f4b4cf7c\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-16604aee945\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">That was the feeling at the September&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/events\/638842266499909\/\" style=\"user-select: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-16604aee945\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">music showcase<\/span><\/a><span data-css=\"tve-u-16604aee945\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/The-Dew-Drop-Inn-DC-482007211949868\/\" style=\"user-select: none;\" target=\"_blank\">The Dew Drop Inn<\/a>, hosted every month by the DC-based band <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/theosyxband\/\" style=\"user-select: none;\" target=\"_blank\">The OSYX<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-16637c093ec\" style=\"user-select: none; font-size: 16px;\">The place was bustling. The energy was heightened like it is for a show that you know is going to be good, but there was something special beyond the usual fevered excitement. A specific and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-16637c093ee\" style=\"user-select: none; font-size: 17px;\"><strong class=\"\">deep sense of <\/strong><strong class=\"\">connectivity<\/strong><\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-166477a7ed8\" style=\"user-select: none; font-size: 16px;\">&nbsp;among the people there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-165f4b4cf7c\">\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-165f4b4cf7c\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-166477a7ed8\" style=\"user-select: none; font-size: 16px;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-16637c093f0\" style=\"user-select: none; font-size: 16px;\">It might have had something to do with the promo for the show:<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-165f4b4cf7c\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-16637d0e94b\"><strong>&#8220;Brace yourself for a SURPRISE ANNOUNCEMENT from The OSYX!&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-165f4b4cf7c\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-16637a9ca58\" style=\"user-select: none; font-size: 16px;\">After three varied, powerful, passion-infused sets from Baltimore&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/santalibradarocks\/\" style=\"user-select: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Santa Librada<\/strong><\/a> (feminist \/ queer \/ trans-fronted punk band whose songs speak to feminism, transgender rights, love, sex and the surveillance state), DC&#8217;s&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CompanyCalls\/\" style=\"user-select: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-16637a9ca59\" style=\"user-select: none; font-size: 16px;\"><strong>Company Calls<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-css=\"tve-u-16637deb2d4\" style=\"user-select: none; font-size: 16px;\">, and Greenbelt&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/lighthouserow\/\" style=\"user-select: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Lighthouse Row<\/strong><\/a>, it was time for&nbsp;<\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-16637deb2d6\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/theosyxband\/\" style=\"user-select: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>The OSYX<\/strong><\/a> to play.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-166477a7edd\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">And midway into their emboldened set, <strong>The OSYX<\/strong> unveiled something huge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-165f4b4cf7c\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-166477a7edf\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u200b<\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-16637deb2d7\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">They announced that they are launching&nbsp;<\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-166477a7ee2\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">a 501(c)3 nonprofit record label called: <\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-165f4b4cf7c\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><a data-css=\"tve-u-166477a7e78\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thiscouldgoboom\/\" style=\"user-select: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>THIS COULD GO BOOM!<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-165f4b4cf7c\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-16637deb2d9\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">They have a clear mission to:<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-165f4b4cf7c\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-16604aee949\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">&#8220;<\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-16604aee94b\" style=\"font-size: 21px;\"><strong>curate, create, publish, promote, and distribute the musical works of under-represented, gender diverse people<\/strong><\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-1660d72d8f8\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-16637d60e72\" style=\"text-align: left;\">And if the immediate outpour of <strong>love and support <\/strong>to this announcement was any indication of where this label is going, it will most certainly be shaking things up.<\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-16637d60e72\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>DC Music Review<\/strong>&nbsp;had some questions for the band about how <strong>This Could Go Boom! We wanted to harness that feeling and send it out into the community.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-166478a06a5\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-166478a0735\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-166478a0737\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-1664792ac2d\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Which is why it makes perfect sense that they are broadening their message into something <\/span><strong>even bigger.<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-1660d8db564\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-1660d8db56c\"><strong><u>Why create&nbsp;<\/u><\/strong><\/span><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/thiscouldgoboom\/\" style=\"user-select: none;\" target=\"_blank\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-1660d8db56e\"><strong>This Could Go Boom!<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/u><span data-css=\"tve-u-1660d8db56f\"><strong><u>?<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-css=\"tve-u-16609cb8391\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-165fa5813c4\">Per its mission statement,&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-16609cb8391\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-165fa5813c4\"><strong>This Could Go Boom!<\/strong>&nbsp;envisions a world where:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-166478dda6e\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-166478ddac6\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-166478ddac8\"><strong> <span data-css=\"tve-u-1660df24215\">&#8220;music informed by and created from <\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-1660df18bec\">gender diverse perspectives is normalized <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/span><span data-css=\"tve-u-166478ddac6\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-166478ddac8\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-1660df1af5f\"><strong>rather than tokenized, fetishized, or marginalized.&#8221; &nbsp;<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"tve_image_frame\" style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"tve_image wp-image-57208\" alt=\"This Could Go Boom Logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" title=\"This Could Go Boom Logo\" data-id=\"57208\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/TCGB-logo-300x300.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Over pizza and a brainstorm session with fellow board members and volunteers, Erin described the label as being &#8220;for people who do not have a seat at a table.&#8221; (To which someone yelled, &#8220;f*ck the table!&#8221; and Erin responded, &#8220;we&#8217;ll build our own!&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>The label wants to set a new standard for those typically underserved in the music industry.&nbsp; Beyond producing records, the label wants to &#8220;<strong><span data-css=\"tve-u-1660df1ea03\">seek equal representation&nbsp;<\/span><\/strong>on the airwaves, online, at music festivals, and <strong><span data-css=\"tve-u-16650f01e83\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">in positions of power and influence throughout the music landscape.<\/span><\/strong>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-16609cb8388\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-16609cb8391\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-165fa5813c4\">\u200b<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-1663837f36f\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-1663837f3c2\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-1663837f3c4\"><strong><u>What makes This Could Go Boom! so significant right now?&nbsp;<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-16609cb8388\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-16609cb8391\"><span data-css=\"tve-u-165fa5813c4\">We can think of many reasons why this matters now more than ever, and we asked this question of Erin. She<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>poignantly and<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>emphatically responded:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-css=\"tve-u-16638258700\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>This Could <\/strong><strong>Go Boom!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-16638258702\" style=\"text-align: left;\">&#8220;This project is about <strong><span data-css=\"tve-u-16638298a49\" style=\"font-size: 22px;\">sharing power<\/span><\/strong>. We want to operate as a non-profit so that we can always remain mission driven rather than profit driven, so that we can <strong><span data-css=\"tve-u-1664795bdec\" style=\"font-size: 20px;\">circumvent patriarchal and colonized thoughts<\/span><\/strong> surrounding marketability, target audiences, and \u2018the way things have always been done\u2019.&#8221; \u2014<strong>Erin Frisby<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-1660d8da3b5\">\n<p data-css=\"tve-u-1660d8da3b5\"><strong><u>How will this happen?<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a <strong><span data-css=\"tve-u-1660e0dd386\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">collective endeavor<\/span><\/strong>. The co-founders have made it clear that this can&#8217;t happen by a few people, but rather that it is a movement that should be led by the people who are directly affected by discrimination. They look for voices that will, &#8220;explore and champion creative <strong><span data-css=\"tve-u-1660e16944a\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">ideas that challenge conventional colonized and patriarchal practices<\/span><\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>This Could Go Boom!<\/strong> will start by with <strong><span data-css=\"tve-u-1660e0dfcc2\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">collaborations<\/span><\/strong> with members of the music community with marginalized identities who are key touch points for artists. According to Erin,<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>the organization<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>plans to &#8220;not only release music from trans and cis women, non binary and intersex musicians,&#8221; but also &#8220;work with, collaborate, and hire writers, marketing specialists, recording engineers, and visual artists from these and other gender-marginalized identities.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>TCGB!<\/strong> is also creating a <strong><span data-css=\"tve-u-166479e204f\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">professional resource directory<\/span><\/strong> of the demographic being served so that people can be more deliberate about the choices they make when booking shows, festivals, radio spots, and undertaking music production projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Erin emphasized that will be an <strong><span data-css=\"tve-u-166386f381d\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">educational<\/span><\/strong> component to the label. If finding local people to work with is a challenge, she said it means, &#8220;we need to insist on learning and professional development opportunities on our projects for those who want to learn these skills. We\u2019re also starting a mentoring program where people can gain live music production experience with hopes of cultivating the engineers of tomorrow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And in terms of <strong><span data-css=\"tve-u-1664798dc8a\" style=\"font-size: 18px;\">leadership<\/span><\/strong>, Erin explained, &#8220;we have a mandate to create a board that accurately reflects our music community, and someday we (<strong>The OSYX<\/strong>) won\u2019t be on the board at all, someone else will. A plan that is going to support a single mother who has experienced homelessness is going to be different than a plan that will support a college aged trans woman of size, which will be different from the perfect plan for a Black musician in her 80s.
