Gordon Sterling<\/strong> has just one more jam for us at Gypsy Sally’s<\/strong> before 2018 closes out. Tonight’s house band will feature Cory Belcher<\/strong> (bass), Natalie Ahearn<\/strong> (keys), Chase Steinberger<\/strong> (drums), Mike Candela<\/strong> (guitar, synth), and as always will be led by Gordon himself (guitar, vocals).<\/p>\n

This year saw some truly memorable moments at the jam. A few weeks ago RDGLDGRN <\/strong>dropped in<\/a> for a surprise appearance ahead of their show at Union Stage,<\/strong> and at the beginning of the year Dior Ashley Brown<\/strong> wowed us<\/a> during her first bucket jam, to name just a couple.<\/p>\n

The bucket jams first burst onto the scene back at the IOTA Club & Cafe<\/strong>, where it found a home for just over a year before the venue closed. It would not take long for Gordon to find a new home for this concept at one of the district’s most beloved venues. The move to Gypsy Sally’s back in September of 2017 provided a boost of adrenaline with a bigger and better stage, lighting, and sound system.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/span><\/p>\n

In July of 2018, the Washington City Paper<\/strong> wrote about the thriving open jam scene in D.C.<\/a>, focusing on Gordon Sterling’s jam and the central role it plays in the scene. I spoke with the author, Sriram Gopal<\/strong>, about our impetus for streaming and archiving as many of the jams as we can:<\/p>\n

Will Urquhart is an audio-visual professional who streams and archives all of the jams he attends on DC Music Review. He looks to the PhishOD app for inspiration, which is an archive of Phish performances going back to the band\u2019s earliest shows from over 30 years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThere are all these phenomenal musicians and we have no idea where any of them are going,\u201d Urquhart says. \u201cThere might be some kid sitting on his phone 30 years from now listening to the earliest recording he could find of this musician he\u2019s really into.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
