The band \u2014 comprised of&nbsp;<strong>Teddy Scott&nbsp;<\/strong>(guitar),&nbsp;<strong>Paul Gregg<\/strong>&nbsp;(vocals, guitar),&nbsp;<strong>Jack Bentsen<\/strong>&nbsp;(alto sax),&nbsp;<strong>Will Lockery<\/strong>&nbsp;(drums), and&nbsp;<strong>Ben Suarez<\/strong> (bass) \u2014 are currently on the road on their largest tour to date.<\/p>\n<p>Bencoolen solidified what we\u2019d already had a hunch about \u2014 they are meant to be experienced live. While their recorded tracks are groovy and well-polished, their live sound is raw, authentic, and gritty. For an hour or so, the band became one with their instruments, working off each other\u2019s energy. While the recorded album is by no means tame, while performing, everything felt electric, more alive. Fueled by the audience\u2019s vibrancy, Bencoolen played confidently and with style, leaving ample room for improvisation and prolonged musical interludes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Jack Bentsen and Teddy Scott of Bencoolen performs at Pearl Street Warehouse\" width=\"944\" height=\"1024\" title=\"Jack Bentsen and Teddy Scott of Bencoolen performs at Pearl Street Warehouse\" data-id=\"77850\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/JAH_7235.jpg\" scale=\"0\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\"><\/span><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Jack Bentsen and Teddy Scott of Bencoolen performs at Pearl Street Warehouse\" width=\"944\" height=\"1024\" title=\"Jack Bentsen and Teddy Scott of Bencoolen performs at Pearl Street Warehouse\" data-id=\"77850\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/JAH_7235.jpg\" scale=\"0\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>From the more chilled out, jazzy vibes of \u201cRoll On\u201d to the hardcore and edgier sounds of \u201cShow Me Your Hands\u201d, Bencoolen performed something for everyone, playing a balanced mix between of new and old tracks.<\/p>\n<p>There were opportunities for each member to show off, with an insane guitar solo during Bencoolen\u2019s latest single \u201cWhen You Look Back\u201d, an eagerly welcomed sax solo to close out the show, and Gregg&#8217;s iconic vocals soaring atop intricate melodies. Horn-heavy and vibrant Disco Risqu\u00e9 had such a wide variety of sounds that were reminiscent of so many different bands \u2014 from <strong>Pink Floyd<\/strong>, to <strong>The Antlers<\/strong>, to <strong>Two Door Cinema Club<\/strong>, to <strong>Bei\u200brut<\/strong> \u2014 every track was a new adventure. Playing a near-consecutive jam for 45 minutes, Disco Risqu\u00e9 had everyone crowded toward the stage almost instantaneously, kicking off the night with infectious funk tunes.<\/p>\n<p>Swift Technique kept the party going with their female-led and retro sound, as well as a mean cover of&nbsp;<strong>Talking Heads<\/strong> \u201dPsycho Killer\u201d. With an eye-catching stage presence, the Philadelphia-based band had impressive and fervent jam sessions that really emphasized their musical prowess.<\/p>\n<p>Bencoolen play with an ease and professionalism that was proven when they were able to maintain their composure when friends rowdily cheered them on from the crowds. Only cracking slight smiles, they were able to rock on without missing a beat.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Bencoolen performs to a capacity crowd at Pearl Street Warehouse\" width=\"1024\" height=\"537\" title=\"Bencoolen performs to a capacity crowd at Pearl Street Warehouse\" data-id=\"77847\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/JAH_7692.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>When the band filed offstage before the encore, the crowd cheered uncoordinatedly for an encore, unable to decide between \u201cone more song\u201d and \u201cencore\u201d. The result was a mix of shouts, cheers, and whistles, which worked just as effectively. After reclaiming the stage, Gregg said, \u201cWant a sax solo to close it out?\u201d And, without waiting for the resulting cheers, he added, \u201cGood, \u2018cause that\u2019s your only option\u201d, before launching into 2016 single \u201cSpotlight\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What started as a gloomy Washington winter night quickly flipped into a warm, high energy dance party, packed with people of all ages who were looking to rock out and have a good time.
