On June 28-30, this intricate&nbsp;and beautiful culture was once again in travel mode, on display for the 30<sup>th&nbsp;<\/sup>straight year at Norfolk Virginia&#8217;s&nbsp;<strong>Bayou Boogaloo Music and Cajun Food Festival.<\/strong>&nbsp;The festival is held in&nbsp;<strong>Town<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Point Park<\/strong> right on the Elizabeth River, bringing to mind a familiar New Orleans landscape. Further cultivating the New Orleans atmosphere are the 20 New Orleans arts and crafts vendors and 15 food vendors providing boiled crawfish and plenty of other Cajun treats.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Dirty Dozen Brass Band\" width=\"1024\" height=\"765\" title=\"Dirty Dozen Brass Band\" data-id=\"96669\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/web-006-Dirty-Dozen-Brass-Band-1466.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Dirty Dozen Brass Band\" width=\"1024\" height=\"765\" title=\"Dirty Dozen Brass Band\" data-id=\"96669\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/web-006-Dirty-Dozen-Brass-Band-1466.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The music was absolutely stunning. <strong>The Dirty Dozen Brass Band\u2019s<\/strong> Friday night headliner set included highlights such as tuba player<strong> Kirk Joseph <\/strong>and baritone sax player <strong>Roger Lewis <\/strong>leading a little second line parade through the crowd, a three song sit in by the trumpet and trombone players from the Ashville NC band, <strong>The Empire Strikes Brass<\/strong>, and several fans being invited up on stage to dance.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Jonathan Long\" width=\"1024\" height=\"844\" title=\"Jonathan Long\" data-id=\"96671\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/web-022-Jonathan-Long-0139.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Jonathan Long\" width=\"1024\" height=\"844\" title=\"Jonathan Long\" data-id=\"96671\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/web-022-Jonathan-Long-0139.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Friday also included a great set from blues master<strong> Jonathan Long<\/strong>, who loves walking around the crowd while he plays. Zydeco band <strong>Chubby Carrier <\/strong>and the <strong>Bayou Swamp Band<\/strong>, the fore mentioned Empire Strikes Brass, and Zydeco band<strong> CJ Chenier<\/strong> and the <strong>Red Hot Louisiana Band<\/strong>. The Zydeco bands kept everybody dancing and The Empire Strikes Brass played a brilliant set of New Orleans-inspired brass band music.<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s main stage lineup included three straight bands that played fully engaged, high-energy sets. First up was an old friend of the festival, the <strong>New Breed Brass Ban<\/strong><strong>d<\/strong>. A very hot afternoon sun kept many in the crowd seeking refuge in the shade, but New Breed kept the hardier souls dancing and singing with plenty of call and response.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Dirty Dozen Brass Band\" width=\"1024\" height=\"863\" title=\"Dirty Dozen Brass Band\" data-id=\"96672\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/web-005-Dirty-Dozen-Brass-Band-0832.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Dirty Dozen Brass Band\" width=\"1024\" height=\"863\" title=\"Dirty Dozen Brass Band\" data-id=\"96672\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/web-005-Dirty-Dozen-Brass-Band-0832.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><span style=\"width: 100%;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Dumpstaphunk shows how to play the funkiest bass solos\" width=\"1024\" height=\"781\" title=\"Dumpstaphunk shows how to play the funkiest bass solos\" data-id=\"96673\" src=\"\/\/www.dcmusicreview.com\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/web-001-Dumpstaphunk-2062.jpg\" style=\"width: 100%; -webkit-user-select: none;\" scale=\"0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Next up was a straight fire set from <strong>The New Orleans Suspects<\/strong>, out on the road with new drummer <strong>Eddie Christmas<\/strong>. Christmas &nbsp;is a veteran NOLA drummer, well-versed in all the city\u2019s funky styles, and proved a great fit for the top shelf R&amp;B, funk and soul of the Suspects. The Suspects are now a well-established powerhouse. They wove danceable groove after danceable groove through their entire set, which like every other band at the festival paid tribute to <strong>Dr. John<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dumpstaphunk<\/strong> closed the festival with the greasiest funk\/two bass set, this side of New Orleans.
