A lifetime worth of stories is almost an understatement to describe what Drew Emmitt and Vince Herman share between them. Thankfully for fans that have been able to catch them on their joint venture as of late, we get to hear a little smidgen of some of their fun. As they take their two man show on the road, a trip that many of us would love to be in the back seat for, they hit smaller and more intimate venues across the country with a comradery that is unmatched by any.

Introduced by the author of the “Leftover Salmon: Thirty Years of Festival” Tim Newby who also gave some great insight and musical history as well as a reading from the book, it set the perfect scene for the evening. The night at City Winery in the District was made even more special, we discovered, as it was being shared with friends from Vince’s college days. Having the chance to speak with several of them as well as Vince himself was an opportunity to understand the bonds that have been strengthened over the years and the fun that is shared between the group.

The laid-back setting and intimate crowd was something special as it gave both Vince and Emmitt the chance to share tidbits, joke with the audience and have a conversation that involved everyone. Hearing stories behind songs, inspiration for them and some of the fun that has gone along with life on the road the twosome has traveled, put a smile on many an attendee’s face.

A nuclear waste, radio active Idaho spud, being ‘pigeon holed’ as a poly enthnic, slangrass band and appreciating free speech were only some of the subjects the fellas touched on. All in all, a great night and an unexpected bond was what the evening might be summarized as. Vince and Emmitt, the two musicians that help to make up the bigger family known as Leftover Salmon, are truly what makes music magical and what makes magical music and we are among the lucky to be able to share nights like this with artists like them.
