Blues rock legend Warren Haynes brought song and spirit to an enthusiastic crowd at The Warner Theatre in Washington, DC, on Thursday, October 3. The Allman Brothers Band alum and Gov’t Mule bandleader led a talented musical quintet, including Kevin Scott (bass), Terrence Higgins (drums), Matt Slocum (keys), and Greg Osby (alto saxophone), through a myriad of originals and covers that encapsulated Haynes’ illustrious career.
For two sets, the band blended musical elements that incorporated rock, funk, jazz, and blues. The sum was a force greater than its parts and blurred musical genres to create a well-oiled musical outfit. Hayne’s fired shots from his Gibson Les Paul with his usual fervor and meaty, warm tone over the dynamic and powerful rhythm section of Higgins and Scott. Osby and Slocum added their flavor with impressive solos and expertly executed tonal layers on saxophone and organ, respectively.
Haynes’ upcoming album, Million Voices Whisper, will mark the fourth solo record of his career, and the follow up to 2015’s Ashes and Dust. The two-disc release on Fantasy Records (out November 1) features frequent collaborator and Allman Brother Derek Trucks, in addition to Jamey Johnson and Lukas Nelson.
The band finishes their fall tour this week with a stop in Syracuse tonight before a Capitol Theatre gig in Port Chester) and a closing show at The Orpheum Theatre in Boston, MA.
